Best option in Katha

  • A modest, brick-built hotel, this is well situated to tour the colonial old town of Katha, where George Orwell was popsted while he wrote “Burmese Days”. The lobby is small but functional. The room we had was spacious, with 2 single beds (double if required), seat, desk and wardrobe. It was clean. The bathroom was one of the more spacious we had in northern Myanmar. My only gripe was the hopelessly inefficient AC in the room. We had it on full blast but it only slightly cooled the room. Breakfast is served in a big restaurant area out the back. The usual Myanmar buffet was available – mostly local dishes, with eggs and toast also available. In the evenings, a band plays here, so it might be better to ask for a room on the road side. Orwell’s local church is just a few metres away.

Clean and good service

  • This hotel was a surprise. I had not expected finding an hotel with a service of that quality in a small city not part of the standard tourist itineraries. The hotel is clean, the building (still from colonial time ?) is nice (not the standard ugly block). The rooms could be bigger; they were very clean. The hotel has a restaurant with many sitting areas outside in the park, very pleasant in the evening, if it does not rain. Food was good. Breakfast buffet was simple but varied enough.

  • Very helpful staff. I arrived by train at 0100 and they were waiting for me. They had a 1927 map so finding Orwell’s locations very easy. I left at 0430 and they had made me a packed lunch. Highly recommended.

  • Overnight stopover on the way to Mandalay”
  • Probably the best hotel in the small town. Very clean room and bathroom, simply furnished. Unfortunately, there was no hot water for showers, but the staff immediately checked the next day (and then worked) breakfast traditional, appetizingly prepared. We have extended one more night because we then made a day’s stay in the city before we continued by Express boat towards Mandalay. A pretty town with many old houses and friendly people.

  • Perfect location for Orwell fans, staff went out of their way to help us.”
  • We stayed here on 2 occasions, with a side trip to Bhamo in between stays. The hotel staff took it on themselves to meet us off the boat on our return, and booked train and bus tickets for us with no commission charged. Quiet location, all Orwell sites are within walking distance and you can borrow Burmese Days from reception to refresh your memory!!
